Texas’ Tom Herman completes new coaching staff by hiring Mark Hagen from Indiana

Hagen will work alongside current assistant Oscar Giles to coach Longhorns’ defensive linemen

Posted February 7th, 2020

Texas coach Tom Herman finished out his coaching staff remodel Friday by announcing the hire of Indiana’s Mark Hagen as the Longhorns’ new defensive line coach.

Hagen was the Hoosiers’ co-defensive coordinator the last two seasons and had been with his alma mater in Bloomington, Ind., the last four. The recruiting website Rivals has twice recognized Hagen as one of the nation’s top recruiters.

At Texas, Hagen’s title will be associate head coach for defense and defensive line coach. He’ll work alongside Oscar Giles, who has coached UT’s defensive linemen by himself the last three seasons under Herman. It is still undecided how Hagen and Giles will split the coaching duties, a team spokesman said.

“Mark came really highly recommended, is a coach (defensive coordinator) Chris Ash has been very familiar with and impressed by, and is someone we all had great visits with during the interview process,” Herman said in a statement.

Hagen has 28 years of coaching experience, mostly in the Big Ten or SEC.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to come work with coach Herman and the UT staff,” Hagen said in a statement. “Obviously Texas Football has great tradition and history, and I’m excited to be a part of it.

“When you think of college football, Texas is going to be in the conversation of top programs in the history of the game,” Hagen continued. “Coach Herman has done a great job the past few years, there’s a lot of great talent on the roster, and I know he’s assembled an outstanding staff.”
