Texas guard Celeste Taylor honored twice by the Big 12 following a big week of basketball

Posted March 2nd, 2020

The Big 12 has taken notice of the biggest week of Texas freshman Celeste Taylor’s young career.

On Monday, Taylor shared the Big 12’s player of the week award with Baylor’s Lauren Cox. The Big 12 also gave its weekly award for freshmen to Taylor. Kansas guard Holly Kersgieter and Taylor are the only players to win both awards during the same week this season.

This past week, Taylor twice led Texas to a win with a career-high scoring total. The 5-11 guard out of New York scored 22 points in a 77-67 victory at No. 25 TCU on Feb. 26. Three days later, Texas ousted Oklahoma behind Taylor’s 27-point night.

This is the first time that Taylor has been recognized as the conference’s top player. She is a three-time winner of the freshman of the week award. Taylor split the freshman honors with Kansas State center Ayoka Lee on Jan. 20, but Lee then earned those accolades by herself in each of the past five weeks.

Taylor is averaging 9.8 and 4.9 rebounds per game this season. Texas (18-10, 10-6 Big 12) will travel to No. 2 Baylor (27-1, 16-0) on Thursday night. Currently the Big 12’s only ranked team, Baylor beat UT 64-44 in January.
