The Texas Longhorns men’s golf team was victorious in the East Lake Cup consolation match in Atlanta, defeating Vanderbilt 4-1 on Wednesday.
Scottie Scheffler, who won the individual stroke play title on Monday, defeated Will Gordon on the 18th hole to seal the match win.
Scheffler started well as he went 2 up after the first two holes. He went 3 up on the back nine and eventually held off a charging Gordon.
The Longhorns trailed early after Patrick Martin defeated Taylor Funk 1 up, but Texas went on to win four straight to take the victory.
Steven Chervony had the biggest win as he defeated Theo Humphrey 7 and 6 to even the match at 1-1. Chervony was already 6 up by the seventh hole.
Gavin Hall put the Longhorns up for good with his 4 and 3 win over Matthias Schwab.
Doug Ghim defeated J. Augenstein 1 up for the other match win for Texas.
Illinois defeated the defending NCAA champion Oregon Ducks 3-2 in the championship match.
The Longhorns won’t be back in action until Feb. when they compete in the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in Hawaii.
