Longhorns in sixth place at Amer Ari Invitational

The No. 12 Texas Longhorns men’s golf team shot 284, 4-under on the first day of the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawaii on Thursday. They sit in sixth place, trailing Texas Tech by 14 strokes.

Doug Ghim is in a tie for 12th place after shooting a 69 to lead Texas. He had five birdies on the day, including three on the back nine to finish 3-under par.

Steven Chervony is two strokes behind teammate Ghim, at 1-under, and sits in a tie for 30th. Chervony was 2-under after the front nine but three bogeys on the back nine cost him.


Scottie Scheffler and Nick Costello both shot 72 on the day and are tied for 43rd place. Scheffler was even before the turn and shot two bogeys and two birdies on the back nine to finish the day even. Costello made both an eagle and a double-bogey to finish even as well.

Gavin Hall is tied for 71st place after shooting 74. A triple-bogey cost him on the 15th hole.

Texas Tech shot 270 to lead after the first round. Southern Cal shot 273 to sit in second place while Stanford is in third after shooting 278.

Jared du Toit of Arizona St. and Kyle Suppa of Southern Cal are tied for first place at 8-under par.

The Longhorns resume action at the three-day tournament at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
