The Texas men’s golf team shot 862, 10 over par to finish in ninth at the Valspar Collegiate in Chula Vista, Calif. on Tuesday.
Oklahoma State won the tournament, shooting 12-under-par 840. Viktor Hovland took medalist honors for the Cowboys. He shot 200 for the tournament.
“The Floridian National Golf Club is a real test for our team,” UT head coach John Fields said. “We have won here before, so we know the ferocity of the course. Doug and Scottie were very close to a great tournament. We need more production from our three through five men and they are capable.”
Doug Ghim led the Longhorns, finishing in sixth place after carding his best round of the tournament. He shot 208, 5 under par, closing with a 67 in the final round. Two of his rounds were in the 60s at the tournament. Ghim opened with a 73 and followed that up with a 68 on Monday.
Scottie Scheffler tied for ninth, shooting 212 for the tournament. His final round of 76 was 11 strokes worse than the 65 he turned in the previous day.
Steven Chervony tied for 38th after shooting 219 while Spencer Soosman tied for 58th, shooting 224.
Drew Jones rounded out the Texas team score by shooting his best round, a 75, on Tuesday. He finished tied for 83rd at 22 over par.
Christoffer Bring competed as an individual and finished in 87th.
