Longhorns, Hammer take second at ASU Thunderbird Invitational

Cole Hammer shot a team-best 67 to lead the No. 7 Longhorns to second place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday.

Hammer took second place, trailing winner Chun An Yu of Arizona State by four strokes. Hammer finished at 205, 8 under par after firing back-to-back 67s in the second and third rounds. He opened with a 71 in Friday’s first round. Saturday’s result is Hammer’s sixth top 10 finish in a row. His 17 birdies were the most by any player in the tournament.

As a team the Longhorns made 60 birdies to lead the competition. They finished at 844, 12 strokes behind first-place Arizona State.


Texas just missed out on having two golfers finish in the top 10 for the tournament. Pierceson Coody shot 211 to finish in a tie for 11th place.

Steven Chervony tied for 34th as he shot 216 while Spencer Soosman finished tied for 41st, shooting 218. Christoffer Bring also tied for 34th, though he was competing as an individual.

Parker Coody rounded out the Longhorns’ team scores with a tie for 46th after shooting 219, 6 over par.
