Story highlights
  • Christian Sigsgaard knocks off reigning ITA indoor national champion.
  • Fourth-ranked Longhorns will host ITA event starting Saturday.

The fourth-ranked Texas men’s tennis team won four singles matches, including one against a recent national champion, and beat 19th-ranked Arkansas 5-2 Sunday in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Longhorns’ Christian Sigsgaard upset Mike Redlicki, winner of the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate championship in November, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (10-6) at No. 1 singles.

“Christian played a heck of a match today,” UT coach Michael Center said. “If (Redlicki) is not the best player in the country, he is certainly one of the very best.”

Texas also won at Nos. 3, 4 and 5, with Yuya Ito beating Adam Sanjurjo 6-3, 6-3; Harrison Scott topping Johan den Toom 6-2, 6-1; and Leo Telles sweeping Oscar Mesquida 6-0, 6-3.

The Horns also took two of the three doubles matches to secure that point, with George Goldhoff and Telles topping Redlicki and Jose Salazar 6-4 and Sigsgaard and Scott beating den Toom and Branch Terrell 7-5.

UT will host a national ITA Kick-Off Weekend event beginning with a 1 p.m. Saturday match against Drake. The Horns will face either Oregon or Rice on Sunday. The team that wins both of its matches in Austin will advance to next month’s ITA National Team Indoor Championships at Virginia.
