Yuya Ito won in three sets to advance to the third round of the singles draw at the NCAA Championships and secured All-America status in the process Thursday in Athens, Ga.
Ito rallied to win after falling 2-6 in the first set with No. 10 Mike Redlicki of Arkansas. The UT freshman answered with a 6-3 win and took the final set 7-5.
“Today was a big day for Yuya to defeat Mike Redlicki, the defending ITA National Indoor champion,” said Texas head coach Michael Center. “To become an All-American is an incredible accomplishment, and I’m really proud of him. He’s excited to play a great player in (Georgia Tech’s) Chris Eubanks tomorrow.”
Ito is the first UT freshman to earn All-America honors since 2008.
Texas sophomore Harrison Scott bowed out of the competition as he fell to Oklahoma’s Alex Ghilea 6-4, 6-4.
“I also want to congratulate Harrison Scott and Christian Sigsgaard,” Center said. “They played really well and had tremendous seasons. They should be proud of themselves.”
Sigsgaard fell in the first round to Sasha Gozun of South Florida 6-1, 7-6 (5) on Wednesday.
