The No. 31 Tulane Green Wave defeated the higher-ranked Texas men’s tennis team 4-0 at the Texas Tennis Center on Thursday.
The No. 15 Longhorns dropped the doubles point and three straight singles matches in the loss.
“We’re not competing from the beginning to the end the way we need to,” UT head coach Michael Center said. “We were in control of a lot of the games in doubles and had chances to gain momentum. We just didn’t execute or compete the way we needed to. They went after us from beginning to end, and if you don’t match that intensity, that’s what’s going to happen”
No. 19 Constantin Schmitz rallied to defeat Yuya Ito to seal the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at first singles.
Hamish Stewart and Tyler Schick defeated Christian Sigsgaard and Adrian Ortiz to open doubles play. Schmitz and Ewan Moore clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (5) win over Leonardo Telles and Rodrigo Banzer.
Luis Erlenbusch kept things going for Tulane with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Telles to make it 2-0.
Moore, ranked 92nd, topped No. 110 Sigsgaard to pull the Green Wave to within a point of clinching the match. Moore won 7-6 (4), 6-4.
