Texas men’s tennis team opens play at Longhorn Invitational

The Texas men’s tennis team won five singles matches and added two doubles victories during the first day of the Longhorn Invitational at the Texas Tennis Center on Friday.

Rodrigo Banzer and Colin Markes teamed up to beat Ilgiz Valiev and Artem Kapshuk of Texas Tech 8-5. Leonardo Telles and Chih Chi Huang also won 8-7 (3) over Matteo DeVincentis and Tim Dollman of Auburn.

Johnny Goodwin won twice in singles competition. He beat Pierce Gilheany of Louisiana 6-3, 6-4 before topping Luis Heredia Gomez  of Marquette 6-3, 6-0.


Banzer won his first singles match but had to retire in the second round.

Markes fell in the first round to Tommy Mylnikov of Texas Tech, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).

Huang also lost in the first round, falling to Trey Hilderbrand of Central Florida, 6-3, 6-4.

Markes and Huang each earned wins in the consolation quarterfinals.

Competition resumes early Saturday.
