Posted February 16th, 2019

The Texas men’s tennis team rolled over Southern Cal on the way to advancing to the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championship in Chicago Saturday.

The Longhorns won the doubles point before making it a 4-0 sweep of the Trojans. Texas next faces No. 2 Ohio State Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

“Got down early in the doubles, but really fought back and got that point,” said UT head coach Michael Center on Twitter.  “Just really jumped on them in the singles tonight. Got all six first sets and got to four pretty comfortably.”

Yuya Ito clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Daniel Cukierman.

Colin Markes and Leonardo Telles won their doubles match 7-5 while Ito and Chih Chi Huang also won 7-5. Christian Sigsgaard and Harrison Scott fell 6-2 to Brandon Holt and Riley Smith before Texas took the 1-0 lead.

Scott made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Laurens Verboven to kick off singles action.

Markes pulled the Longhorns to within a win of the sweep as he defeated Smith 6-3, 6-4.

Should the Longhorns win Sunday, they’ll compete in the final Monday at noon.

“It’s gonna be another great test for us tomorrow,” said Center about facing the top seed in the tournament, Ohio State, Sunday.
