The Texas men’s tennis team took a hard-fought 4-3 win over Illinois at the ITA National Indoor Championship in Chicago Friday.
Leonardo Telles clinched the win for the Longhorns in a match that had him trailing 5-3 in the final two sets. He defeated Zeke Clark 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) in the comeback.
The first-round win over the No. 14 team in the country puts the No. 6 Longhorns in the quarterfinals against No. 5 Southern Cal.
Texas actually led the match 3-0 before the Illini came back to tie the contest at 3-3.
The Longhorns opened the match by taking the doubles point. Telles and Colin Markes won 6-4 after Illinois won the first doubles match. Harrison Scott and Christian Sigsgaard clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win.
Yuya Ito made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Alex Brown.
After Markes won 6-2, 7-5 to make it 3-0 for Texas, Illinois started to come back.
Sigsgaard fell to Aleks Kovacevic in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 before Keenan Mayo made it 3-2. Mayo defeated Scott 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Siphosothando Montsi topped Chih Chi Huang 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4), setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
