Yuya Ito advances to round of 16 at NCAA Championships

Yuya Ito defeated Victor Pham of Columbia Tuesday to advance to the singles round of 16 at the NCAA Championships in Orlando, Fla.

Ito won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to set up a match with Brandon Holt of Southern Cal on Wednesday.

The Texas junior also made it to the round of 16 as a freshman in 2017.


After trading sets through the first two, Ito broke Pham just once in the third set to take the lead early. The two held serve the rest of the way, leading to Ito’s victory.

Meanwhile in doubles action, Christian Sigsgaard and Harrison Scott fell to Simen Bratholm and Nick Brookes of Northwestern 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (8). The team from Northwestern needed a 10-point super tiebreaker to take the win. The Longhorns took an 8-7 lead, but Northwestern won three straight points to advance.
