Yuya Ito bows out in round of 16 at NCAA Championship

Posted May 22nd, 2019

Yuya Ito’s run at the NCAA Championship ended in the round of 16 as he fell to Brandon Holt of Southern Cal in Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday.

The Texas junior made it to the round of 16 for the second time in his career, but Holt prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Ito finishes the season with a 41-7 overall record, including 28-3 during the dual match season.

The loss halted an eight-match winning streak that Ito held going into Wednesday. He clinched the Longhorns’ national championship match against No. 8 Petros Chrysochos of Wake Forest earlier this week.

Ito started the match strong, winning five straight games to close out the set. Holt bounced back in a hurry, however, winning five straight games in the second set to even the match.

Holt took a three-game lead to start the final set, eventually winning the match.
