Texas men advance to ITA Indoor Nationals

No. 1 Longhorns beat No. 21 Florida State 4-0

The top-ranked Texas men’s tennis team rolled over No. 21 Florida State 4-0 Sunday to earn a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championship.

It was the second sweep in a row for the Longhorns, who swamped Indiana on Saturday at the Texas Tennis Center to reach Sunday’s ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match.

Texas earned the doubles point as Christian Sigsgaard and Yuya Ito defeated Alex Knaff and Sebastian Arcila 6-1 and Chih Chi Huang and Cleeve Harper matched that score against Marcus Walters and Chase Wood.


Huang, a sophomore, clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Loris Pourroy after freshman Eliot Spizzirri topped Marcus Walters 6-1, 6-4 and Siem Woldeab, also a freshman, beat Sebastian Arcila 6-3, 6-3.

The national tournament will be Feb. 14-17 in Madison, Wis. This will be Texas’ third trip in a row to the event. Before that, the Longhorns (4-0) will visit No. 6 Ohio State on Saturday and host Georgia on Feb. 8 at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.

The UT women also qualified for the ITA Indoor Nationals. The women’s tournament will be Feb. 7-10 at Chicago.
