Return of the Texas Relays in 2021 moved up a week

Posted May 4th, 2020

Track and field fans won’t have to wait as long for the return of the Texas Relays.

The UT athletic department said on Monday that the 2021 Texas Relays will be held a week ahead of schedule. Originally planned for March 31-April 3, 2021, the Texas Relays will now begin on March 24. The four-day event at Myers Stadium will conclude on March 27.

This will be the 93rd time that UT has hosted the Texas Relays. The annual event was cancelled this past March because of the coronavirus pandemic. Before this spring, the Relays had been held every year since 1935.

The Texas Relays is usually an attraction for both athletes and fans. More than 7,000 high school, collegiate and professional athletes qualified for the 2019 event. Texas said it drew 45,753 fans over those four days.

Since 2021 is now an Olympic year, the Texas Relays could be used a springboard for UT athletes. In 2016, Morolake Akinosun, Chrisann Gordon, Courtney Okolo and Ashley Spencer all competed at the Texas Relays before winning medals at the Rio Games.
