Cyera Hintzen scores again, Texas soccer wins home opener

Posted August 30th, 2018

The No. 23 Texas soccer team was tested Friday night but ended up with a 2-1 win over Long Beach State to open the home season at Myers Stadium.

Mackenzie McFarland scored her first career goal, the game winner in the 62nd minute.

Cyera Hintzen scored yet again, moving to five goals in four games to lead the Longhorns to the win.

It was a tough contest with both teams taking 11 shots. Long Beach State led in shots on goal, 5-3, but Texas made its shots count.

“From our standpoint, it wasn’t attractive by any stretch, but you talk about the scoring efficiency of Cyera Hintzen,” said Texas head coach Angela Kelly on the team’s Twitter account. “Mackenzie McFarland one shot, one goal. We’re going to be really excited to move forward certainly off this W.”

Nicole Curry made four saves on the night, only giving up a goal in the 50th minute. Ashley Gonzales tied the game from point-blank range.

Hintzen gave the Longhorns the lead in the 19th minute on a left-footed screamer from the top of the box.

After Gonzales tied the game, McFarland found herself in perfect position to put back the winning goal. Dollas hit the crossbar from long range and McFarland put the ball in the back of the net after gaining possession.

“Just a credit to our players for the perseverance to gut this one out,” Kelly said. “Like I said it wasn’t attractive but we’re going to take it.”

The win is the first game of a seven-game home stand for the Texas soccer squad.
