Longhorns soccer opens Big 12 play with overtime win

Posted September 21st, 2018

The Texas Longhorns soccer team got a scare from Baylor, but eventually took a 2-1 overtime win to open conference play at Myers Stadium Friday night.

Cydney Billups scored just 30 seconds into the overtime period to lift Texas to the win, improving the Longhorns to 9-0-1.

“That’s a great team. Julie James, no. 20 in the midfield had a spectacular match,” head coach Angela Kelly said of Baylor in a post on Twitter. “They gave us fits.”

Cyera Hintzen assisted on the winning play with a centering pass that slipped through to a waiting Billups.

After the golden goal crept into the net, the Longhorns celebrated in a pile.

“Really proud of our squad,” Kelly said. “So pleased with the response. What a fantastic first goal and then the courage in the overtime.”

The match was very much in doubt before that.

Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a goal by James. Ariel Leach and Ally Henderson assisted on the play.

The Bears held the lead through the first half and Texas didn’t respond until the 57th minute.

Mackenzie McFarland tied the game with her second goal of the season. Hintzen and Emma Jett assisted on the goal.

Baylor held an advantage in shots and shots on goal in the match. The Bears took 18 shots to the Longhorns’ 13 while putting six on frame. Texas had five shots on goal.

Jennifer Wandt made three saves for the Bears as did Nicole Curry for Texas.

The Longhorns soccer squad will try to stay undefeated as it goes on the road to face Oklahoma State Friday at 7 p.m.
