Cyera Hintzen scored a late goal and Savannah Madden made a save on a penalty to lift the Texas soccer team to a season-opening 4-3 win over Gonzaga at Myers Stadium on Thursday night.

With the Longhorns leading by a goal, the Bulldogs earned a penalty kick with just five seconds left on the clock. Alaysia Lane took the penalty and tried to place the ball in the right side of the net, but Madden read the play and made the match-clinching save.

Hintzen, a two-time All-American, scored her first goal of the season with help from Julia Grosso who earned an assist on the play in the 81st minute.

The Longhorns fell behind by a goal in the first half but eventually took a 3-1 lead before the Bulldogs made a comeback.

Erin Healy gave Gonzaga a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute before the Longhorns scored three straight goals in the first half.

In addition to supplying the game-winning assist, Grosso scored two goals of her own in the first half. After Sydney Nobles tied the game at 1-1 with her first collegiate goal, Grosso scored twice in just over five minutes to put Texas up 3-1.

Gonzaga started the comeback in the second half, getting goals from Lauren Elwer and Gabriela Maas in the 59th and 67th minutes.

Madden made eight saves in the match. Texas faced 23 shots, 11 on goal. Meanwhile the Longhorns scored four goals despite putting just seven on goal.
