Posted March 4th, 2017

The Longhorns softball team came up just short against the No. 6 Arizona Wildcats, falling 2-1 in a walk-off in Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday.

An RBI double by Katiyana Mauga in the bottom of the seventh scored the game-winning run as Mandie Perez advanced home from second base.

Dejah Mulipola went 3 for 4 with a run scored on the day as the Wildcats (17-1) accounted for eight hits. Mulipola scored on an error in the bottom of the first to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Mickenzi Krpec tied the game when she singled to score Bekah Alcozer in the top of the fifth inning. It was the only run the Longhorns (11-8) managed as both pitchers had strong performances.

Taylor McQuillin (4-0) picked up the win for Arizona, allowing a single run on seven hits through seven innings. She struck out eight, including Kelli Hanzel three times, and walked just one batter. McQuillin gave up one extra-base, a double, to Alcozer.

Paige von Sprecken (3-1) took her first loss of the season as she gave up two runs, one unearned, on eight hits through 6 2/3 innings. She struck out four, walked two and had a wild pitch.

Jessie Harper went 1 for 3 with a double for Arizona while teammates Ashleigh Hughes and Reyna Carranco each had singles.

Texas’ Devon Tunning was 2 for 3 while Randel Leahy, Jade Gortarez and Malory Schattle each had hits for Texas.

The Longhorns softball squad will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tucson.
