The Texas Longhorns softball team fell to Cal State Fullerton in a pitchers’ duel 3-2 in nine innings in Fullerton, Calif. on Friday night.
Alexis Gonzalez put the ball in play as she faced UT pitcher Brooke Bolinger (4-2) in the bottom of the ninth and an error by Devon Tunning allowed Delynn Rippy to score the winning run.
Kelsey Kessler (10-4) just edged out Paige von Sprecken, allowing two runs on seven hits through nine innings while striking out eight. Kessler improves to 10-4 while von Sprecken ended the game with no decision as she allowed two runs, one unearned, on six hits through eight innings. She struck out nine in the effort.
Kaitlyn Slack was 2 for 4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Tuesday DerMargosian also had an RBI for Texas (14-11).
Mikaela Francis was 2 for 3 for Cal State while Shianne Brannan was 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Taylor Ellsworth scored the first run for Texas on a triple by Slack in the top of the fourth inning.
DerMargosian doubled the lead when she drove Slack home later in the inning.
Brannan pulled the Titans (14-13) to within a run on a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth before a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh kept the game going. Gonzalez drew the walk that scored Ariana Williams.
