Jessi Haffner hit a solo home run and Brandi Needham pitched a two-hitter as the Oklahoma State Cowgirls defeated the Texas Longhorns 1-0 in the Big 12 softball opener in Stillwater on Friday.
Haffner’s home run in the bottom of the second inning was all the offense the Cowgirls (20-11, 1-0 Big 12) would need as Needham (10-4) dominated from the mound, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out six. She retired 14 straight Longhorns to end the game.
Tiarra Davis (3-6) took the tough loss as she gave up just one run on four hits through six innings. She struck out four and walked two in her fifth complete game of the year.
Kaitlyn Slack and Kelli Hanzel each had hits for the Longhorns, but that’s all Texas (17-12, 0-1) could muster.
Alex Edinger was 2 for 2 while Randee O’Donnell accounted for Oklahoma State’s only other hit.
The Longhorns couldn’t score with runners on the corners in the top of the third inning, hitting into two straight ground outs.
The opening Big 12 softball series continues Saturday at 2 p.m.
