Texas softball falls despite one-hitter by Erica Wright

Posted March 25th, 2017

Erica Wright pitched a one-hitter for the Texas softball team, but that hit was enough to hand the Longhorns (17-13, 0-2 Big 12) a 2-1 defeat by Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Saturday. It was UT’s second Big 12 loss to open conference play.

Madi Sue Montgomery’s two-run home run in the bottom of the second was enough to spoil Wright’s performance. Wright (3-3) struck out six and walked three in six innings.

Reagan Hathaway hit a solo home run in the fourth for Texas’ only run.

Shea Coats (4-4) earned the win for the Cowgirls (21-11, 2-0), allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven. She didn’t allow a walk in seven innings.

Texas had an opportunity to tie the game in the fourth inning after Hathaway’s homer. Taylor Ellsworth singled to get on base and Tuesday DerMargosian took her place as the runner. Jade Gortarez doubled with two outs, but DerMargosian was thrown out at home to preserve the lead for Oklahoma State.

Great defensive plays by Maddi Holcomb and Alex Edinger helped the Cowgirls limit Texas. Holcomb made a diving catch in the third while Edinger made a running catch in the fifth.

Texas will try to take a win on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Stillwater.
