The Texas Longhorns softball team had little trouble in defeating Texas Southern 5-0 in a contest at McCombs Field on Wednesday.
The win makes it four in a row for Texas (24-18), which is coming off a sweep of Texas Tech over the weekend. Texas Southern fell to 17-14 with the loss.
Taylor Ellsworth had a double and an RBI while Randel Leahy and Kelli Hanzel each had RBI doubles to lead the Texas offense.
Five Texas pitchers earned the combined shutout as they allowed just three hits in the game. They struck out six and walked two.
Erica Wright got the start and struck out two in just one inning of work.
Paige von Sprecken (6-4) picked up the win as she allowed no hits through two innings.
Bekah Alcozer drew a walk and scored two runs. Kaitlyn Washington and Celina Felix each scored a run for the Longhorns.
Ellsworth flied out in the first, but Washington scored on the play, followed by Felix who scored on a throwing error.
The Longhorns added two more runs in the third inning on RBI doubles by Leahy and Hanzel.
Von Sprecken helped her own cause with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth that scored Alcozer.
The Longhorns softball team will next face Iowa State for a three-game series at McCombs Field beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
