The Longhorns softball team split their first two games of the Puerto Vallarta Challenge on Thursday in Mexico. They won 2-0 over Rutgers in the first game before falling to Mississippi 8-2 later that evening.
Texas committed three errors in the loss while Mississippi scored in all but one inning to dominate the game.
Ally Mena was 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs. Autumn Gillespie went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 doubles. Kylan Becker went 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
Kaitlin Lee picked up the win for Mississippi, allowing no runs on 4 hits through 4 innings.
Erica Wright suffered the loss as she gave up 4 runs on 4 hits in just 2 innings. Her tough night included 4 walks and a wild pitch. She struck out three in the effort.
At the plate, Ki’Audra Hayter was a highlight for Texas. She went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored.
Ciera Schick had an RBI for Texas while Paige von Sprecken hit a double, the only extra-base hit for the Longhorns.
Earlier in the day, von Sprecken led Texas on the mound and at the plate as she earned the complete-game win and hit a home run against Rutgers. She allowed no runs on 3 hits and struck out five from the mound.
Freshman Janae Jefferson went 2-for-3 with a double. Taylor Ellsworth was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a triple. Ellsworth scored on a single by MK Tedder in the fourth inning that doubled the Longhorns’ lead.
