Longhorns split a pair at St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational

Posted February 15th, 2019

The Longhorns split a pair of games at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational Friday, falling 7-1 to LSU after starting the day with a 5-1 win over Florida Atlantic in Clearwater, Fla.

The loss to the No. 8 Tigers is the first for the No. 11 Longhorns (6-1) on the season.

LSU got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and built the advantage up to 7-0 before the Longhorns plated a run in the sixth.

Amanda Sanchez had three RBIs, as did Shemiah Sanchez, to lead the Tigers’ attack.

Shelby Wickersham allowed just one run on seven hits through 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win.

Brooke Bolinger got the start for Texas, allowing four runs on four hits through just two innings. Ariana Adams pitched four innings and gave up three runs on four hits.

After winning four out of their first six games by run-rule, the Longhorns’ bats struggled against the top-10 team.

Janae Jefferson and Miranda Elish each had two hits while Lauren Burke drove in Texas’ only run on a double.

Michaela Schlattman went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Tigers.

In the first game of the day, Elish was outstanding at the plate, hitting a home run and a double on the way to driving home three runs. The offensive outburst came a day after she picked up her second win in the pitcher’s circle.

Shealyn O’Leary picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six through seven innings.

Shannon Rhodes hit her second home run in as many days to put the Longhorns up early. Her first-inning, two-run blast scored Kaitlyn Washington.

After Rhodes’ homer, Elish hit a two-run double to make it 3-0 through the first inning.

Elish’s home run in the fourth inning scored Tuesday DerMargosian to make it 5-0 before Florida Atlantic scored their only run in the sixth.

Texas finishes off competition at the invitational Saturday with a game against another ranked SEC team. The Longhorns take on No. 18 Kentucky at 9 a.m. with coverage on the SEC Network.
