The No. 11 Longhorns softball team split its first two games at the Tennessee Invitational, defeating BYU 14-0 before falling 9-5 to Tennessee on Friday in Knoxville.
A late rally came up short for Texas as it scored three runs in the seventh against the Vols. Despite hitting four home runs in the game, UT couldn’t generate enough offense to win.
Three Tennessee players hit home runs, with Cailin Hannon leading the way. She went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBIs.
Reagan Hathaway, Mary Iakopo, Miranda Elish and Kaitlyn Washington all homered for Texas.
Elish was hit with the loss as she allowed five runs on five hits through just 2 2/3 innings. She struck out five and walked two. Matty Moss earned the win for Tennessee, giving up two runs on eight hits through four innings.
In the first game, Texas picked up another run-rule victory, topping BYU in five innings to open play.
Shealyn O’Leary continued her historic freshman run, earning her eighth win without suffering a defeat. She didn’t allow a run on four hits and struck out six in five innings.
The offense amassed a season-high 15 hits. Ten Longhorns had hits, with six batters driving in runs.
Hathaway and Iakopo each hit home runs for Texas. Hathaway went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs while Iakopo finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. MK Tedder tripled and drove in two runs. McKenzie Parker went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Janae Jefferson also drove in two runs for Texas.
Things started strong for UT as Hathaway homered in the first inning. Texas added three runs each in the second and third innings.
A six-run fourth inning all but sealed the win for Texas. Iakopo ended the offensive onslaught the way it started, with a home run in the fifth. BYU failed to close the wide margin in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game.
