In two days, the Texas softball team defeated the top two teams in the country.
The No. 3 Longhorns defeated No. 2 Washington 8-6 at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., on Friday a day after topping No. 1 UCLA.
Add in Tuesday’s win over No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette and that makes three top 10 wins in four days.
The Longhorns (18-2) started strong with a five-run first inning before having to hold off a charging Washington squad.
Lauren Burke went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBIs. Her two-run shot in the sixth proved to be the difference in the game.
Shannon Rhodes went 2 for 2 with a run scored while Kaitlyn Slack scored twice and drove in a run.
Mary Iakopo scored a run and drove home another while Janae Jefferson and Miranda Elish also crossed home plate.
Courtney Day picked up the win, allowing one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings. Shea O’Leary got the start but allowed four runs on three hits in just 1 1/3 innings.
The Huskies (16-2) responded to the Longhorns’ strong first inning by nearly wiping out the lead in the second. Washington scored four runs in the second frame.
Texas added another run in the fourth before Burke’s homer in the sixth. The Huskies scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.
Washington helped the Longhorns in the first, with a wild pitch and two walks plating runs for Texas.
A home run by Baylee Klingler and a three-run shot by Jadelyn Allchin helped keep Washington alive in the second.
Texas next takes on Fresno State before facing No. 13 Michigan on Saturday.
