The No. 17 Texas women’s tennis team fell behind early but came back to win 4-1 over Columbia at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday.
Despite losing the doubles point, the Longhorns took four singles victories to advance to Sunday’s final.
“Having lost the doubles point to an excellent and well-coached Columbia team the pressure on our lineup for the singles was intense,” head coach Howard Joffe said. “Even more daunting was having three freshmen debut in our top four spots.”
Katie Poluta sealed the win with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Sarah Hu.
Anna Turati and Dani Wagland had the only doubles win for Texas as Columbia took two of three matches. They defeated Columbia’s Ali Pollack and Renee Ren 6-3.
The Longhorns bounced back as Bianca Turati defeated Rima Asatrian 6-1, 6-1. Neda Koprcina defeated Alexandra Solovyev 6-2, 6-2 to give the Longhorns a 2-1 lead before UT freshman Petra Granic won 6-3, 6-3 over Andrea Kevakian.
