Posted October 10th, 2018

The unranked Kansas Jayhawks dealt a big blow to the No. 4 Texas Longhorns volleyball team, taking over first place in the Big 12 with a 25-18, 28-26, 20-25, 25-23 win in Lawrence, Kan. Wednesday night.

The loss is the Longhorns’ first in 25 matches of Big 12 play.

Jada Burse led the Jayhawks with 22 kills on the night while teammate Ashley Smith added 17 with a .533 hitting percentage. A kill by Burse followed up a service error by Texas to close out the match.

Micaya White had 16 kills to lead the Longhorns, but she hit just .204 on the night. Kansas outhit Texas .294 to .234 overall.

Logan Eggleston made 12 kills to go with three blocks. Morgan Johnson led Texas with four blocks. The teams tied in blocks with eight apiece.

The Longhorns started the first set with a 3-1 lead before the Jayhawks went on an 8-1 run to make it 9-3. That early advantage held up as the Longhorns never got closer than six points.

The second set was much closer and Texas nearly claimed it. A bad set by Allie Nelson gave Texas a 25-24 lead, but Kansas won three of the next four points to take the set and a 2-0 lead.

The Longhorns avoided the sweep with a third-set win after trailing 14-11 at one point. A 6-0 run put Texas up 19-16. An attack error by Burse followed a kill by White to seal the third game for the Horns.

A long rally in the fourth set ended with a kill by Johnson to put UT up 19-18. Later Texas trailed 23-21 before two straight points tied it again. A service error gave Kansas match point before Burse closed it out.

The win puts Kansas (12-4) in first place of the Big 12 with a 5-0 record in conference. Texas (10-4) dropped to 5-1 and second place. The Longhorns volleyball squad will have a shot at revenge on Nov. 10 when the Jayhawks visit Gregory Gym at 7 p.m.

In the meantime, Texas will travel to Norman, Okla. to take on the Sooners at 7 p.m. Saturday.
