Texas guard Alecia Sutton led Team USA with 19 points in a 95-58 victory over Mali at the FIBA U19 World Cup to open the competition in Udine, Italy, on Saturday.
Sutton was 6 of 11 from the field and had four rebounds to go along with three assists. She also made a couple of 3-pointers and was perfect from the free-throw line.
“I think we feel good about how we played,” Sutton said. “I tried to focus on my shot and stayed aggressive.”
Joyner Holmes, another member of the squad from UT, collected a game-high 10 rebounds while adding nine points. She added four assists and two steals in the win.
As a team, the U.S. had 23 assists and shot 43 percent from the field while holding Mali to just 35 percent.
