Texas women’s basketball rallies to beat Oklahoma State

Posted January 25th, 2020

The Texas women’s basketball team turned an eight-point deficit into a 61-56 win over Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Saturday afternoon.

The Longhorns (13-6, 5-2 Big 12) trailed the Cowgirls (12-7, 3-4) by eight points after three quarters but outscored them 19-6 in the final quarter. Texas finished the game on a 13-2 run and held Oklahoma State to just two points in the final 6 minutes, 3 seconds to take the win.

Charli Collier led the Longhorns with 14 points and fell a single rebound shy of a double-double. She was hot from deep, shooting 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point line. Her final 3-pointer came with 3:18 on the clock and pulled the Longhorns to within a point.

A steal and a layup-and-one by Celeste Taylor gave Texas the lead for good. Taylor finished with 13 points, five rebounds and a steal.

Sug Sutton also scored in double figures for Texas and was a key defender, making five steals. Sutton had 12 points, six assists and six rebounds as she filled up the box score.

Oklahoma State’s Vivian Gray led all scorers with 24 points, but the Cowgirls couldn’t fend off Texas down the stretch.

“I thought that we struggled for the majority of the game,” UT coach Karen Aston said. “We missed a lot of bunnies, and I thought that affected our confidence in the game. But we did what we had to do defensively to win down the stretch.”

Though Texas shot just 33% to the Cowgirls’ 44%, the Longhorns held a big advantage at the free-throw line. Texas went 14-for-17 while Oklahoma State went to the line just once and missed.
