Sophia Schubert shot 2 under par to lead the Texas Longhorns to a tie for second place Friday after the first round of the Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio.
The Longhorns shot 288, also 2 under par, to tie with Oklahoma State, one stroke behind Iowa State.
Schubert’s 70 has her trailing leader Madison Talley of Kansas State by one stroke. Three birdies on the last four holes helped her recover from a bogey on the 12th and put her in contention for medalist honors.
UT’s Haley Mills is tied for third place after shooting a 71. Back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes put her at 2 under before a bogey on the 13th.
Two other Longhorns finished the first round in the top 20 as Julia Beck sits tied for 13th at 73 and Natalie Karcher is tied for 19th at 74.
Teriza Abe is tied for 33rd after shooting a 76.
