Bianca Turati upset the sixth-ranked singles player as the Texas women’s tennis team defeated its first top-20 oppenent this season, knocking off No. 17 Miami 5-2 at the Whitaker Tennis Courts on Saturday.
The No. 18 Longhorns took the doubles point and notched four singles wins to take the match.
Turati highlighted singles competition as she defeated a top-10 opponent, taking a three-set win 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 over No. 6 Sinead Lohan. Turati just debuted at No. 85 in the ITA rankings this week.
Turati’s twin, Anna, also took a singles win as she defeated Dominika Paterova 6-2, 6-0.
“All three freshmen won their matches against tough foes,” head coach Howard Joffe said. “Anna (Turati) had laser focus, Bianca (Turati) beat one of the better players in college tennis and Petra (Granic) showed amazing skill and the toughest and highest of character in clinching this excellent win.”
Granic defeated Estela Perez-Somarriba 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the team win and Neda Koprcina also added a singles win for Texas. Koprcina’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Maci Epstein gave the Longhorns a 2-0 lead after winning the doubles point.
Granic and Dani Wagland teamed up for a 6-0 win over Paterova and Perez-Somarriba. Anna Turati and Koprcina sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Lohan and Silvia Fuentes.
