The Texas women’s tennis team earned a spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 4-3 win over California at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.
The No. 12 Longhorns won four singles matches to defeat the 11th-ranked host.
The Golden Bears won the doubles point, but Anna Turati’s 7-5, 6-4 win over Julia Rosenqvist closed out a tough matchup in favor of the Longhorns.
“Today was an excellent step in the maturation of a very young team,” said head coach Howard Joffe. “We will need to improve and perform better if we are to be a legitimate force. All in all, it was a great weekend for Texas.”
After trailing 1-0 due to the doubles competition, Fernanda Labraña pulled Texas into a tie with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexis Nelson.
Marta Perez-Mur put Texas up 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jasie Dunk.
Cal claimed its first singles victory when Maria Smith defeated Bojana Markovic 6-0, 6-2.
Bianca Turati, ranked 10th, gave Texas another lead when she bested No. 27 Anna Bright 6-1, 6-2.
The match was tied up once more when Olivia Hauger defeated Petra Granic 6-3, 6-4.
The ITA National Team Indoor Championships take place at the University of Wisconsin next month. Before that, Texas will take on Illinois and Northwestern.
