The No. 11 Texas women’s tennis team lost its second contest in a row, falling to No. 19 South Carolina 4-2 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Saturday in Madison, Wis.
After falling behind 3-0, the Longhorns got singles wins from twin sisters Bianca and Anna Turati to pull within a point. But Ingrid Gamarra Martins was able to hold off Petra Granic, clinching the win for South Carolina.
“The field here in Madison is littered with elite teams, which we discovered rather quickly and unfortunately today,” coach Howard Joffe said. “We definitely didn’t perform very well, but the ladies didn’t shortchange each other on the effort.”
The consolation bracket match started with South Carolina earning the doubles point with two victories.
Silvia Chinellato topped Bojana Markovic 6-2, 6-3 in singles to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 lead. Then Megan Davies made it 3-0 with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Fernanda Labraña.
That’s when Texas got back into the contest. Top-ranked Bianca Turati gave UT its first point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mia Horvit. No. 41 Anna Turati made it 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 38 Hadley Berg.
