Multiple Longhorns move on at ITA Texas regional

The Texas women’s tennis team had multiple representatives move on at the ITA Texas regional in College Station on Friday.

Three Longhorns earned singles victories in the round of 32 to move on to round-of-16 action scheduled for Saturday.

Fernanda Labraña defeated Anna Bowtell of Rice 6-2, 6-1. She’ll face Jessica Anzo of Texas A&M on Saturday.


Lexi Ryngler also won in straight sets, topping Mimi Kendall-Woseley of Houston 6-1, 6-2. Ryngler next takes on Margarita Skriabina of Texas Tech in the round of 16 Saturday.

Marta Perez Muir dominated Hana Kvapilova of Texas State 6-0, 6-2. Perez Muir faces Sahaja Yamalapalli of Sam Houston State on Saturday.

In doubles, Labraña and Tijana Spasojevic took two wins on the day. They first beat Alexandra Heczey and Hala Khaled Badwy of North Texas 8-3 in the round of 32. The Texas duo qualified for the quarterfinals with an 8-4 win over Petra Kaszas and Constandena Nicolaou of Sam Houston State.

Labraña and Spasojevic face Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Smirnova of Rice on Saturday morning.

Perez Muir and Ryngler also earned a doubles victory, beating Claudia Bartolome and Sarai Monarrez of SMU 8-7 (7-3). The Texas pair later fell in the round of 16 to a team from Rice 8-4.

Spasojevic fell in the singles round of 32 7-5, 6-3 to Mercedes Aristegui of TCU.

Friday’s action came on the heels of a seven-win performance by the Longhorns on Thursday.
