Texas women’s track team ties for first at Drake Relays

The Texas women’s track team tied Baylor for first place at the 107th Drake Relays Saturday in Des Monies Iowa.

The women’s team won two titles and the Texas men’s team got victories in the 4×100 and 4×400 meters relays.

UT’s Caitland Smith captured the 100 meters title and was part of the victorious 4×100 meters relay team.

She joined Courtney Okolo, Zola Golden and Morolake Akinosun and won the relay in 44.47 seconds. Smith ran a personal-best 10.55 seconds in the 100.

The meet came down to the 4×400 meter relay where Texas placed second and Baylor finished seventh. The Bears led Texas 24-18 going into the race and Texas earned eight point with the second-place finish while the Bears got two points.

Golden, Akinosun, Melissa Gonzalez and Okolo crossed in 3 minutes 34.11 seconds. Okolo nearly caught Ohio State in the final leg but fell short.

Charles Anumnu, Carlton Anumnu, Zack Bilderback and Aldrich Bailey Jr. took the men’s 4×100 in 40 seconds flat.

Carlton Anumnu, Chris Irvin, Bailey and Bilderback edged conference rival Baylor in the 4×400, winning in 3 minutes 5.51 seconds.

The men’s team finished second with 20 points despite competing in just two of five events. Illinois won the team title with 24 points.
