What Tom Herman said after Texas bowled over USC 37-14
Posted September 15th, 2018
Texas started slowly on Saturday night against USC, dropping behind 14-3 in the first quarter, but scored 34 unanswered points to rout the Trojans 37-14.
After the victory, Herman addressed the media — including American-Statesman reporters Brian Davis, Danny Davis, Kirk Bohls and Cedric Golden. Here is some of what he had to say.
Opening statement:
“I want to thank all of our fans. What an incredible electric atmosphere…I was really, really proud how they supported us. To go down 14-3, there was no negativity, no hanging the heads.”
On the defense in the second half:
For our defense to go out in the second half and shut them out and score on a blocked field goal. Our goal is to win the Big 12 title and that’s ahead of us.”
On the way Texas climbed out of the hole:
“We hadn’t been able to do that as long as we’ve been here….as I said in the opening, there was no negativity….offense, defense and special teams all had an impact on digging out of the hole.
Texas coach Tom Herman: “What did I say to the team? This needs to be the standard.”

On stuffing the USC run game:
“Every week’s gameplan is to stop the run and make the quarterback throw, especially a freshman quarterback. Was really proud how we did that.”
On kicker Cameron Dicker’s three field-goal performance:
“He showed why he earned the job. He’s made some big kicks in his life. When you play for Lake Travis, you make some pressure-packed kicks”
On why he left starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger so long:
“I left Sam in because you don’t want to throw a cold back quarterback in the game that late.”
