Texas women win Big 12 Indoor Championship, men take third

The Texas women set a new record on the way to capturing a third straight Big 12 Indoor Championship in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday.

The Longhorns scored 180.33 points, the best ever, en route to their sixth title in seven years.

The men’s team finished in third place with 118 points. Iowa State won the men’s title with 137 points.


Kathryn Gillespie helped the Longhorns take three titles; in the distance medley relay, the mile and the 800 meters. She won the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 36.89 seconds. Gillespie took the 800 meters in 2:06.33.

Julien Alfred won both the 60 meters and the 200 meters. She took the 60 meters in 7.15 and the 200 in 23.02.

Kennedy Simon won the 400 meters in 51.81, the best in the NCAA this season.

Brooke Jaworski finished the 600-yard run in 1:19.14.

The Longhorns also won the women’s 1600-meter relay in 3:32.64. Alfred, Jaworski, Simon and Stacy Ann Williams teamed up for the win.

Elena Bruckner won the shot put title with a personal best mark of 55 feet, 2 1/4 inches. It’s the Longhorns’ first women’s shot put title since Michelle Carter won in 2007.

For the men, O’Brien Wasome swept the long jump and the triple jump, the first Longhorn to do that since 1999. He won the triple jump with a mark of 52-10 3/4 Saturday.

Tripp Piperi won the men’s shot put title for the third straight year. He posted a personal best of 68-10.

John Burt won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.71 for his second title in a row in the event.

Jonathan Jones ran a 45.90 to win the 400 meters while Micaiah Harris finished the 200 meters in 20.65 for the title.

Leo Neugebauer won the heptathlon with 5,848 points in his first attempt.
