Update, 7:10 p.m. — Now, officials say the running events will start at 8 p.m., as will the field event warmups. Officials plan to get the the day’s schedule completed tonight, which means the meet likely won’t end until sometime approaching midnight, if you’re interested in making a night out of it. Gates open at 7:30 p.m.
Update, 6:05 p.m. — Another thunderstorm with lightning has camped out over Myers Stadium, forcing another delay in the water-logged NCAA West track meet. Officials, which had planned to resume the meet at 6:30 p.m., announced at 5:50 p.m. that the stadium was being evacuated again and would delay the start of the already-delayed meet for “30 minutes minimum.”
Update, 5 p.m.— Officials say the meet will resume at 6:30 p.m. and gates will open to spectators at 5:30 p.m.
Update, 4:10 p.m. — Officials announced they hope to resume the meet at 6 p.m. with warmups for field and running events. Originally, running events were scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. It also was announced that the men’s hammer throw, originally scheduled for this afternoon, now will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The NCAA West track and field preliminary rounds at Texas’ Myers Stadium were put on hold at 1:45 p.m., CDT, when lightning was detected in the area.
All athletes, meet personnel and spectators were evacuated from the stadium and directed to either the adjoining Manor Parking Garage or Royal-Memorial Football Stadium across the street.
The meet tentatively was scheduled to resume at 2:15 p.m., but it could be later if radar indicates lightning remains in the area.
The only events underway at the time of the delay were the women’s pole vault and discus.
