The Texas women’s basketball team has selected as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 regular-season championship. Texas received five of 10 first-place votes from league coaches, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Karen Aston, entering her third season as coach of the Longhorns, welcomes a deep and talented team, led senior forward Nneka Enemkpali and junior center Imani McGee-Stafflord. The backcourt of Empress Davenport, Brady Sanders and Celina Rodrigo also are among 10 players who played last year.
UT’s 10 returning players were responsible for 82 percent of the team’s offense, 86.5 percent of the rebounds and 86.2 percent of the assists.
Among the notable newcomers is 5-11 guard/forward Ariel Atkins of Duncanville, ranked by ESPN as the nation’s No. 4 recruit in the country last season. A McDonald’s All-American, Atkins played on the U.S. women’s under-18 national team that won a gold medal this summer in Colorado Springs.
