Goestenkors hired to broadcast SEC basketball

Former University of Texas basketball coach Gail Goestenkors has been hired by the SEC Network to be a commentator for women’s games.

The newly launched SEC Network will air more than 60 games on television this season with a doubleheader every Sunday and Thursday and a Women’s Game of the Week every Monday.

Goestenkors, 51, recently was recently named to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and will be enshrined in 2015. This spring, she resigned as an assistant coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.


Goestenkors had two years left on a seven-year contract paying her $1.25 million per season when resigned as head coach at Texas in March 2012. She started to coach the Longhorns in 2007 following a stellar coaching tenure at Duke.

She was 102-64 at Texas and 498-163 overall in 20 seasons as a head coach.
