Irving Cistercian senior quarterback Matthew Merrick has committed to Texas but will delay his enrollment by a year.
Merrick, a three-star prospect, according to 247sports.com’s composite rankings, will grayshirt next year and enroll in school in January 2016. He will count toward next year’s signing class.
Merrick (6-3, 185 pounds) had offers from Nevada and Colorado State. He is the 57th-rated pro-style quarterback in the nation as well as the No. 175 player in the state of Texas.
The way it looks, Texas will have four scholarship quarterbacks in 2016. Tyrone Swoopes will be a senior and Jerrod Heard a redshirt sophomore. Zach Gentry, who is committed to Texas in this year’s class, will be in his second season with the program.
