OKLAHOMA CITY — The Final Four of the NCAA volleyball tournament is running concurrently with the American Volleyball Coaches Association convention.
So there are a lot of tall people walking around downtown OKC.
Maybe 100 people filed into Chesapeake Energy Arena on Wednesday morning to get a glimpse of second-seed Texas at practice. The Longhorns face unseeded BYU at 6 p.m. Thursday. Stanford and Penn State will follow in the other semifinal.
Getting into the arena was a challenge.
A coach carrying a bag of popcorn was stopped at the entrance and told snacks are not permitted. She had to throw it away.
Attendants will check every last square inch of your backpack. And if you happen to be wearing a hat, you’ll be forced to remove it for security purposes. And if you happen to briefly leave the arena and return wearing that same hat, you’ll be asked to remove it again.
Longhorns coach Jerritt Elliott seems to be relaxed, joking with media members and chatting up other coaches. His team seems loose, like they’ve been here before. And they have, three years running. It will be tough, but the Longhorns can win this thing.
