Texas football rang in the new year with a new recruit.
On Thursday morning, four-star cornerback Davante Davis of Miami’s Booker T. Washington picked the Longhorns over Florida State.

Davis is the nation’s No. 26 cornerback, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings of the industry leaders in recruiting. He is the No. 295 overall prospect. Most of the premier programs wanted him, including College Football Playoff semifinalists FSU, Alabama and Ohio State. Florida, Georgia, Auburn, and Clemson were in the mix as well.
Davis (6-3, 200) is the 22nd member of a class at Texas that could swell to 30 or so by the Feb. 4 signing day. Two other Florida prospects are in the fold: Lakeland linebacker Cecil Cherry, and Tallahassee wide receiver John Burt. Burt is considering switching his commitment to Auburn.
Two Miami prospects will announce their plans at Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Davis’ teammate, four-star tight end Devonaire Clarington, is believed to be leaning toward Texas. Four-star athlete Tim Irvin (Westminster Christian) has Texas in his final list of schools.
