The Texas softball team was selected to finished third behind defending Big 12 champions Oklahoma and Baylor in the preseason coaches’ poll released Wednesday.
The No. 4 Sooners (51-13, 16-2 Big 12 in 2014) were a unanimous pick for the top spot for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. Oklahoma received all six possible first-place votes (coaches could not vote for their own team) and 36 total points.
No. 10 Baylor (46-16, 13-5) picked up a single first-place vote and and 30 points while the Longhorns (36-23, 12-6) were a close third, getting 27 points. Oklahoma State (19 points) was picked to finish fourth and Kansas (17 points) was picked to finished fifth. Iowa State and Texas Tech were tied for sixth with nine points.
Texas returns seven position players that started at least 31 games and 15 overall letter winners from last year, including NFCA All-American junior outfielder Lindsey Stephens and NFCA All-Region selection and Freshman of the Year finalist sophomore pitcher Tiarra Davis.
Texas softball opens the 2015 season on Feb. 6 against UC-Santa Barbara at the Kaijkawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
