The high school coach of Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams told the American-Statesman on Monday that Adams will not transfer to Texas.

Instead, Adams will announce Monday between playing his senior season at Oregon or returning to EWU, according to Dean Herrington, the coach of Bishop Alemany in Mission Hills, Calif.

Adams never visited Texas, and Texas coaches never visited Adams.

Adams was runner-up in each of the past two seasons for the Walter Payton Award, which is given to the top player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

UCLA also showed interest in Adams.

Thus far, Texas has been unable to land a veteran quarterback to compete with Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard this coming season. Kevin Hogan is returning to Stanford, and former Florida QB Jeff Driskel is transferring to Louisiana Tech. Ohio State’s Braxton Miller has not announced whether he’ll return to a crowded quarterback competition with the Buckeyes or seek playing time elsewhere.

Former Texas QB Connor Brewer is leaving Arizona and is interested in returning to Texas, his father told the Statesman last month.
