Junior outfielder Lindsey Stephens racked up two weekly honors Tuesday, being named NFCA National Player of the Week and Big 12 Co-Player of the Week for her performance at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
Stephens finished the weekend with two grand slams and a .471 batting average, helping the Longhorns to a 3-2 record, including a 9-4 win Sunday over No. 16 Arizona State.
“I’m really proud of Lindsey,” said coach Connie Clark. “She was amazing this weekend. The running backs buy their offensive lineman watches. I think she needs to at least take Devon Tunning and Stephanie Wong to lunch. She had some people in front of her set the stage for those two grand slams.”
Stephens had five extra-base hits, including three home runs and 11 RBIs. Her two grand slams gave her four for her career. She had one each in three of Texas’ five games.
She just missed hitting for the cycle against the Sun Devils, posting a double, triple and home run as part of a 3-4, three-run, three-RBI effort in the win.
“It’s crazy our season has already started and I start my weekend off like that,” Stephens said. “Let’s keep it going.”
The Longhorns will play their home opener Friday against IPFW, scheduled for 4 p.m. It will be the first in a doubleheader for Texas.
