Texas tops Rice, 3-1, in baseball season opener

Posted February 13th, 2015

Texas 3, Rice 1

Why Texas (1-0) won: No. 9 hitter Travis Jones fell down 0-2 to start the seventh before fouling off a couple pitches to his ankle. He then got hit by a pitch on his back and came around to score on Collin Shaw’s second double of the night. Jones struggled in the field at first base but sacrificed his body at the plate to redeem himself.

Why Rice (0-1) lost: No. 5 hitter Connor Teykl got greedy to lead off the eighth and was thrown out trying to stretch a single to a double by left fielder Ben Johnson.

Key stat: Texas’ four pitchers — Parker French, Travis Duke, Connor Mayes, and Ty Culbreth — combined for no walks. And that was important, as French hit three batters and Duke one.

On deck: at Rice, Noon and 4 p.m. Saturday (doubleheader), 1300.
